Description

THERE'S A SPANISH TRAIN is perhaps the darkest and eeriest country-rock song ever written I would argue, because it tells the story of a ghost train that first travels east and then heads below carrying lost souls. Once you’re on board they won't let you go! My dad was a civil engineer with Canadian National Railway, designed many bridges, tunnels, stations, etc. Later in his career, he was involved with investigating deadly and tragic train accidents across Canada. A Spanish Train was lingo used by railway men for a doomed train that meet with a horrible accident and the loss of lives. This is context and inspiration for this song. I hope you enjoy. This song is dedicated to the memory of my father Valer S. Bartfay who passed away on Feb. 28, 2022.

Lyrics

[Instrumental with train effects
and whistle incorporated]
Verse I
I had a dream last night about a Spanish train. Took me on-board and nearly
drove me insane. I meet a gypsy girl
who said, “There’s a Spanish train for the living dead.”
[Chorus]

Chorus
There’s a Spanish train that only a few know. Travels east and then goes
down below. There’s a Spanish train for lost souls. Travels east and then goes down below.

Takes you down below. Takes you down below. Takes you down below,
when her whistles blows.
Takes you down below. Takes you down below. Takes you down below,
when her whistles blows…

Verse II
If you want to buy a ticket on the Spanish train, talk to the man with no name. He’ll be wearing a black hat.
That’s all you need to know, and
dark sunglasses because his eye’s glow!
There’s a Spanish train and it leaves tonight. Better hurry, it departs at
midnight. Well the Spanish train carries
lost souls. Once you’re on-board, they won’t let you go!
[Repeat Chorus]
[Then Instrumental for Finale
with train effects and whistle incorporated]
