Description

In 1863 slavery was abolished. But in Suriname people had to continue working for ten years, while their owners were compensated. I’ am a great-grandson and also descendant of great-great-great parents who were also slaves. Of course I can't tell much about this awful time but from stories of my parents who have received stories from their parents and grandparents it was a black page from history.

What slavery means to me. Slavery is unfree labour, the result of which must be wholly or partially surrendered, and in which the worker is the physical property of the master. The pains, emotions are still recognizable and palpable in everyday life. In 2023 Suriname celebrates 150-year abolition of slavery and in that context I composed this song which fits.
