Canadian Christmas

Every where I turn
I see the lights.
I’ve got to admit,
That they look really nice,
Just as I had dreamed.
Ever since i was a child
I’ve seen these scenes
In movies
And on my tv screen,
Never imagining
That it would be me,
Here,
Experiencing a white Christmas
For the very first time.
I’m used to the sunshine,
Never seen or felt snow,
My camera roll
Is full of pictures of me
In my winter coat,
That I send back home
For my family to see.
All of this is new to me.
Work parties,
And candy canes,
New traditions
And gift exchanges.
Santa Claus camped out
in every mall.
Mountains of presents,
Something for us all.
New pastries to taste,
Expderiencing humility
While learning how to skate.
Trying to do
All of the Canadian things,
Embracing this opportunity
And the joys that it brings,
Trying to fit in,
Even when my accent betrays me,
This winter wonderland
Absolutely amazes me,
And is more than I’ve ever wished,
As an immigrant
experiencing
My first Canadian Christmas.
